Medical Instrument Sterilization Guidelines
All Med Miles instruments are supplied in a non sterile condition. Before first use, instruments must be thoroughly cleaned, disinfected, and sterilized.
Medical instruments intended for repeated use should be regularly cleaned and inspected for technical condition.
1. Inspection Before Use
- Check whether the instrument is clean, free from damage, and fully functional.
- Instruments showing signs of damage or wear should be withdrawn from use.
2. Handling After Use
- Remove visible contaminants immediately after use.
- Instruments should be kept moist to prevent residues from drying.
- Transport instruments to the reprocessing area in closed containers that protect against contamination.
3. Pre Disinfection
- Place instruments in an appropriate disinfectant solution intended for surgical instruments.
- Follow the disinfectant manufacturer’s instructions regarding concentration and exposure time.
- Rinse instruments thoroughly with clean water after disinfection.
4. Cleaning
Manual Cleaning
- Use soft brushes and appropriate cleaning agents.
- Pay special attention to joints, serrations, and hard to reach areas.
Mechanical Cleaning
- Mechanical cleaning may be performed using ultrasonic cleaners or washer disinfectors.
- Ensure that instruments are properly positioned to allow effective cleaning.
5. Drying
- Instruments must be completely dry before further processing.
- Use lint free cloths or compressed air for drying.
6. Maintenance and Lubrication
- Apply medical grade lubricants to joints and moving parts of surgical instruments as needed.
- Do not use silicone based oils unless specifically recommended.
7. Packaging
- Use sterilization pouches or wraps approved for medical use.
- Ensure instruments are packaged in an open position where applicable.
- Label packages according to sterilization procedures.
8. Sterilization Process
- Steam sterilization is recommended.
- Standard parameters include a temperature of 134 degrees Celsius for a minimum of 5 minutes.
- Follow the sterilizer manufacturer’s instructions.
- If sterilization parameters are not met, the process must be repeated.
9. Post Sterilization and Storage
- Store sterilized instruments in a dry and clean environment.
- Protect instruments from mechanical damage and contamination.
10. Number of Sterilization Cycles
- Medical instruments are designed to withstand multiple sterilization cycles, typically between 200 and 500 cycles.
- The service life of an instrument depends on proper handling and maintenance.
11. Additional Notes
- Follow the guidelines of medical institutions and applicable regulations.
- Avoid contact between instruments and aggressive chemicals.
- Instruments should be cleaned and sterilized immediately after use.
